Urbs | latin for city| is a small architecture, design and research based studio. Matt and Alyson Beaton are a husband and wife team of unapologetic urbanists. Our work is all about people and how we as citizens instinctively create communities within larger cities. We know that it is our neighborhoods are the urban fabric that makes Austin great. Over the past 20 years we have worked, lived in and studied urban spaces. We strive to understand how our communities have evolved and philosophically represent who we are as citizens within them. We have come to understand how the smallest businesses and individuals shape places making them unique and special.
Alyson Beaton is an interdisciplinary designer/maker that goes between visual, product, and spacial design. Alyson approaches projects hoping to see beyond what is expected. Her years of practice has manifested itself in projects that engage and speak about urbanism and living in cities, starting with Grow Books Press, Lille Huset Dollhouses, and most recently her city inspired textiles. Her design experience also includes interior architecture and design. The city is her muse for creating great spaces that are unique to the individuals that live in them. Alyson completed her Bachelors in Environmental Design from Texas A&M University, and Master of Fine art in Visual Communications from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is also an author and professor of design, currently teaching at the University of Texas at Austin School of Design and Creative Tech.
