HIGHLAND EXPANDED BUNGALOW, AUSTIN TEXAS

Expanded Bungalow

The renovation of our home in Austin took a simple bungalow and expanded it up and back adding the additional space we wanted for our family. It was important with this project to retain the original structure for several reasons, one being budget, we could not afford to tear down the house, second, for character and third, respect for the street. We believe that houses are as important to our city as any other buildings. Regardless of keeping the original house, the new house needed to work with the other houses on our block. Truth be told, we did not want to create a β€œnew” house to look old so we went with what was existing and used that vocabulary to create a new house from the existing. The project took about 8 months in total from design to construction and is still a bit in progress.

You can read my post on downsizing if you want all of the details, but storage was very important throughout the design.
